My friend, west coast colleague, and incredible doctor and human, Dr. Rachel Sarnoff: “I held the iPad up so that my patient’s family could see her awake, smiling, wiggling her toes and most importantly… without the breathing tube she had needed for so long. I took a deep breath, just as she did. Here was a light streaming into a bleak monotony of dark. Some good news amidst a sea of bad. Her dedicated nurse let the tangle of IVs go and told her family what a privilege it had been to take care of her here in the ICU, but that she thankfully didn’t need us anymore. My goggles were fogged, my mask salty and wilting, glued to my smiling, teary face. I left the unit that day feeling a little lighter. There will be many more difficult and sad conversations to come but there will also be more of these cherished examples of togetherness and sometimes, recovery. I hope reading this makes you feel lighter. There is so much dark each time we log on - a little light here and there only helps. Yours through thick and thin from the front lines of Los Angeles, Rachel Sarnoff, MD, PGY-1”
